UMBRIA POTTERY:

Umbria
is fully part of those few regions of Italy that posess an ancient ceramic tradition; in fact, the entire Umbrian territory can boast the production of excellent earthenware and majolica that have reached the highest levels of technical and artistic expression over the centuries.
Thanks to the territorial vocation that characterizes the Umbrian soil, favored by the geographical morphology; rich in clayey earth, water and woods, with ideal wood to support the kilns, the art of majolica in Umbria has experienced a great development.
The production of earthenware has been documented since the thirteenth century and the use of this material testifies the real passion of the Umbrian people for this type of processing.
We talk about of the brightness of the bucchero, the Renaissance "grotesques", the magical reflections of the luster, up to the most innovative forms of modern artistic ceramics and the production of building and brick ceramics. The history of Umbria is therefore above all the history of its relationship with this art and of an economic activity, often boundless in the pure search for beauty for beauty.
The art of ceramics in Umbria has had a notable development in numerous and important areas but Deruta (PG), Gubbio (PG) , Gualdo Tadino  (PG) and Orvieto (TR) represent the brightest stars of this firmament and find continuity in a craftsmanship that never ceases to research, document and protect the its original and specific characters, each of these towns produces characteristic pieces and employs particular processing techniques.
