Hand-painted ceramics Sicilian decorations

SICILY POTTERY:

Sicily
, the Mediterranean cradle of civilization, culture and art, is an important testimony of the best known handcrafted creations of ceramic artifacts. The entire region has always been a crossroads of peoples, despite the different dominations, however, Sicilian ceramics has been able to maintain its specific and distinct character.
Pottery appeared for the first time in Sicily in the prehistoric period and in particular in the Neolithic.
The greatest development of its processing took place in the Greek period, and then faded during the Roman and Byzantine dominations.
The arrival of the Arabs on the island gave a new and strong impulse to the art of ceramics: glazing, a technique from the East, was introduced. This technique consisted of a mixture of substances to be sprinkled on the ceramic body, which vitrifies during firing. The presence of silicon is fundamental: this one, melting at high temperature with other substances, gives color to the ceramic and makes it waterproof.
In the second half of the fourteenth century, with the Spanish domination, styles and techniques changed slightly, with the introduction of new colors. In the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, Sicilian ceramics took on the style of the Italian Renaissance.
The Sicilian tradition passes through cities such as Santo Stefano di Camastra (ME), Caltagirone (CT) and Sciacca (AG). The artisans continue to pass on their experience and the handcratf production process is done by hand and the final quality of the works obviously depends on the master who makes them.
