The Papal Swiss Guard is an armed corps in the service of the Papacy, created on 22 January 1506. It is the only body of Swiss Guards still operational and is the oldest permanent body in the world to have been in service for over five centuries without interruption. They serve in Vatican City, but also during the Pope's travels together with security agents. The Papal Swiss Guard it is formally equipped with traditional weapons such as halberds, but also has modern small firearms.
