ABRUZZO POTTERY:
The history of majolica in Abruzzo begins in the late Middle Ages, when the most ancient tradition of manufacture of local early medieval ceramics is flanked by the one with coated ceramic with tin glaze; the so-called majolica, which originates in the Western Islamic environment. This art has very ancient origins, but it became famous in the sixteenth century.
Abruzzo gives us many examples of fine craftsmanship related to the processing of ceramics and it was precisely the good workmanship of the majolica, the lively decorations, but also the cheapness of the products, due to innovative production systems, which made the Abruzzo region, in particular the small village of Castelli, one of the most famous and appreciated centers for this art.
Entire generations of craftsmen artists who pass down the sophisticated techniques from father to son, create until today one of a kind and unique objects; initially the clay was extracted from the quarries, refined to be worked, finished, fired and finally decorated. Firing was the most delicate phase as the materials needed a certain temperature and the ovens were clearly not equipped with thermometers.
There are two provinces that can be distinguished for their the history linked to the production of ceramics: Teramo (TE) with the well-known Castelli under the slopes of the Gran Sasso, and Chieti (CH) linked to the pottery tradition of Rapino, born on the slopes of the Majella massif, which thanks to the nature rich in water and clay has favored the birth of ceramic workshops.
